Save energy, save money, save the planet!

Reducing the environmental impact of big events like Terra Madre Salone del Gusto 2016 through the use of renewable energy.

“Unless we lessen environmental damage, conserve on our use of energy and other natural resources, and attempt to slow global warming, disaster lies aheaSEeD_Energiad. The success of development, especially in India and china, have provided those countries the economic wherewithal to increase energy usage, but the world’s environment simply cannot sustain such an onslaught.”

So wrote Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel prize winner for economics. We want to do everything we can to reduce our environmental impact, using renewable energy and reducing resource consumption. That’s why we’re proud to announce that Terra Madre Salone del Gusto 2016 will be the first ever Slow Food event to use exclusively renewable energy!

Humankind’s way of life is causing irreparable damage to nature, and we should instead be examining the ecosystem, its flux of material and energy that renews and aligns itself according to its capacity to absorb and metabolize any surplus, in order to redesign our own models of development. We need a Third Industrial Revolution, as Jeremy Rifkin says, bases on renewable, non-polluting energy. We have almost exhausted the world’s reserves of fossil fuels. At the beginning of the 20th century very few barrels of oil were needed to meet global demand, while now we consume more than 80 million barrels of oil daily? All too often the value of these fossil fuels is calculated simply according to the financial cost of extraction, processing and distribution, when we should be considering the price for the planet, both in environmental and social terms – greenhouse gas emissions and wars fought over oil. Fossil fuels are among the main causes of the greenhouse effect that has led to an increase in the global average temperature of almost more than 1.5° celisus between 1880 and 2012.

We’ve thought about how to reduce the environmental impact of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto 2016 through renewable energy, whose provision is guaranteed by our partner, IREN. For the first time, we’re proud to announce that all the energy required for the event will come only from renewable energy, and we’d also like to start preparing the next step forward: to produce the energy on site, for example through the use of solar panels. Other savings (both financial and environmental!) will be made possible thanks to the use of energy-efficient light bulbs and domestic appliances, such as refrigerated wine cellars.

Do you do what you can to reduce energy waste?

There are lots of good practices to save energy that everyone can adopt! For example, when you buy an appliance you should read the energy label to make sure its at least class A, if not A+ or A++! Actual consumption also depends on the way you use appliances: in the case of refrigerators and freezers, for example, you should avoid opening the doors too often and for too long, adjust the thermostat to a medium position, place them correctly (away from sources of heat, and at least 10cm from the wall), maintain them properly and not put food inside them that does not need to be refrigerated.
